We camped this long Labor Day weekend at Lake Wister State Park in Oklahoma. This Park is located in a region of Oklahoma that is part of the Ozarks. The Ouachita Mountains are located here.
I booked a camping site just a few weeks ago. We were lucky to find anyplace at all and really lucked out to find just 1 site left at Lake Wister. It was the ONLY site avaible for our 30 foot trailer in all of the state parks in Oklahoma for the Labor Day weekend.
The Oklahoma State Park system has a great search tool that allows you to search all of their parks at once and you can enter the things you need (length of your rig, water, electric, sewer, etc.). You then input your dates and click go. It will list all of the parks and number of sites available for those dates. Remarkably quick compared to the Texas site. Thankfully they are changing the Texas site soon. Oklahoma’s site is the best! Because of that quick and easy search we were able to enjoy a beautiful getaway in the Ozarks. If you are looking for a great place I can recommend Lake Wister. I give this State Park 5 stars! It is a true getaway to nature. We were booked at the Victor campground area, which is 7 miles off the main road, way back in the woods, lake front, and nature. This State Park is known for the lake activities. You can fish, kayak, boat, swim, and more at this State Park. Every vehicle at our campsite had a watercraft of some sort. We had our simple kayak, which was perfect for this weekend. The park headquarters is back on the main road. The park ranger was very helpful in providing me with information about kid friendly hikes on the property. She also gave me some great Oklahoma state guidebooks about the state and all of the parks. This area of the park near the headquarters/office has cabins for rent that have great Lake views. This area also has beach/water access. This is where we put in our kayak and the kids swam all day long yesterday. In spite of the Park being at campcity of camping trailers and RV’s it was remarkably quiet, low key, and laid back. We had the beach area to ourselves for most of the day. It was amazing!
There is a national scenic byway not far from Lake Wister. I highly recommend taking a couple of hours to drive this scenic route, as you will get some beautiful mountain views. They have many areas to pull off to take photos at overlooks. Here is the website for the Talimena Scenic Byway- http://www.talimenascenicdrive.com
Here are a few of the photos I took while on the Talimena byway:
Lake Wister state park also has several playgrounds and a large splash pad area for this kids to enjoy. It is a family friendly state park that is perfect for family getaways, especially if you enjoy being at the lake.
